GUIDELINES FOR CONTESTANTS
META 2024 GENERAL RULES
• META 2024 will feature eight contests in the writing, speaking, and quizzing categories.
• The contests will be held from 12th February 2024 to 20th February 2024 at St. Joseph’s University, Langford Road, Bengaluru.
• Each institution can field an unlimited number of teams/participants, unless otherwise specified.
• Registration can be done using the QR code below or at the event. You may also confirm entries from your institution with a phone-call or message to the numbers provided below or an email to metajosephs@gmail.com by 10 February 2024.
• Teams/participants must carry valid identification from the institution they are representing.
• The decision of the judges will be final and binding on all participants.
• While we will allow on-the-spot entries for Writing and Quizzing; speaking events require prior registration.
• A championship shield will be awarded to the college that tops the overall scoreboard.
• All payments may be done at the registration desk on the day of the event. In case of online payment, please remember to save your transaction IDs.

CONTESTS
1. The St. Joseph’s University Prize for the Personal Essay
● Participants are expected to write a personal, exploratory essay. The submission must be original and offer a lively engagement with experience. The suggested range is about 1500 3000 words.
● No entry fees.
● Theme: Keeping Secrets
● The contest is open to school (Std. 8–12) and college students (UG or PG), and to the general public (any age). Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Best School Entry, Best College Entry, and Best Open Entry.
● Submissions can be sent by ordinary post to The Department of English, St. Joseph’s University, No. 36, Lalbagh Road, Bengaluru 560027, handed over in person or emailed as a word document to sjuprize@gmail.com.
● The last date for receiving submissions (in any form) is by 11:00 PM on 15th February 2024. Please specify which category you are applying in. The entries will be judged by an independent jury of writers. Results will be announced on 20th February 2024 at 6:30 PM at St. Joseph’s University and announced on our Instagram handle @sjulitsoc

2. Cosplay contest – MetaGalata
● Theme – Egg around the world
● Time limit: 1 + 1 minute
● Participants should adhere to the University dress code.
● Entry fee: Rs 100/-
● Date and time: 12th February 2024, 5:00PM
● Venue: Banyan Tree/Loyola Hall
3. The Prof. T.R.H. Peck Memorial Lecture Contest
● Open to college students.
● Participants must pick either a literary work or an author or an idea that is important in literature for their lecture.
● Participants may use a PowerPoint presentation.
● Time limit: 5 + 2 minutes.
● Entry fee: Rs 100/-
● Date and time: 13th February 2024, 2:00PM
● Venue: Loyola Hall
4. JAM (Just a Minute)
● Open to college students.
● Participants will speak without hesitation, repetition or deviation on an assigned topic within a minute amid challenges from other contestants.
● Limited entries.
● Date: Prelims on 13th February 2024 at 4:30 PM, Finals on 20th February 2024 at 5:00 PM
● Venue: Banyan Tree/Loyola Hall
● Prior registration is essential.
● Entry fee: Rs 100/-
5. Love Poetry
● Open to college participants.
● Participants should write 10-15 lines of poetry. The prompt will be given on the spot.
● Use of phones will not be allowed.
● Entry fee: Rs 100/-
● Date and time: 14th February 2024, 4:30PM
● Venue: De Nobili Hall
6. The Fr. Hedwig Da Costa Memorial Shakespeare Elocution Contest
● Open to college participants. Not more than 6 participants per institution. Participants may use monologues or significant speaking moments from Shakespeare’s plays.
● Time limit: 3+1 minutes.
● Prior registration is essential.
● Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 readings of a male character’s lines, and to the top 3 readings of a female character’s lines.
● Entry fee: Rs 100/- (Rs 500/ for 6 participants per institution)
● Date and time: 15th February 2024, 4:30PM
● Venue: Loyola Hall
7. Ott-aku
● Teams of two.
● Open to college students and the public.
● Entry fee per team (Students- Rs 100/-) & (Open- Rs 200/-)
● Written quiz of 40 questions on OTTs/films/shows.
● Date: 17th February 2024, 2:30PM
● Venue: A314, Arrupe Block
8. Bookends – the book quiz sponsored by Bookworm
● Teams of two
● Open to college students and public
● Entry fee per team (Students- Rs 100/-) & (Open- Rs 200/-)
● Date: 17th February 2024, 4:00PM
