Greetings from St. Joseph’s University, Bengaluru! The Department of English at St. Joseph’s University will host the eleventh edition of META, our annual Festival of Literature. META 2023 will be inaugurated on 6th February 2023 and will run till the 16th of February at our premises on Langford Road.

Apart from contests open to college students, Meta 2023 will feature interactions with young writers, workshops, and lecture demonstrations. Writers appearing this year include Vasudhendra, Nilanjan Chaudhri, Nisha Susan, Amulya Shruti, and Mallika Prasad.

Guidelines for contestants

META 2023
General Rules

META 2023 will feature seven contests in the writing, speaking, and quizzing categories.

The contests will be held from 6 February 2023 to 16 February 2023 at St. Joseph’s University, Langford Road, Bengaluru.

Each institution can field an unlimited number of teams/participants, unless otherwise specified.

You may also confirm entries from your institution with a phone-call or message to the numbers provided below or an email to metajosephs@gmail.com by 5 February 2023.

Teams/participants must carry valid identification from the institution they are representing.

The decision of the judges will be final and binding on all participants.

While we will allow on-the-spot entries for Writing and Quizzing; speaking events require prior registration.

A championship shield will be awarded to the college that tops the overall scoreboard.

1. St Joseph’s University Prize for the Personal Essay

❖   Participants are expected to write a personal, exploratory essay. The submission must be original and offer a lively engagement with experience. The suggested range is about 1500–3000 words.   For more information, click here.
❖   The contest is open to school (Std. 8–12) and college students (UG or PG), and to the general public (any age). Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Best School Entry, Best College Entry, and Best Open Entry.  
❖   Submissions can be sent by ordinary post to The English Department, St. Joseph’s University, No. 36, Lalbagh Road, Bangalore 560027, handed over in person or emailed as a word document to barbranaiduprize@gmail.com.
❖   The last date for receiving submissions (in any form) is the evening of 12 Feb 2023.
❖   The entries will be judged by an independent jury of writers. Results will be announced on 16 Feb 2023. The prize-giving ceremony will be held on the same day.

2. The Prof. T.R.H. Peck Memorial Lecture Contest

❖ Open to college students
❖ Participants must pick either a literary work or an author or an idea that is important in literature for their lecture.
❖ Participants may use a PowerPoint presentation
❖ Time limit: 5 plus 2 minutes.

3. Ott-aku

❖ Teams of two
❖ Open to college students and the public 
❖ Entry fee per team (Students – Rs 100/-) & (Open – Rs 200/-) 
❖ Written quiz of 40 questions on OTTs/films/shows

4. Bookends – the book quiz sponsored by Bookworm

❖ Teams of two
❖ Open to college students and public 
❖ Entry fee per team (Students – Rs 100/-) & (Open – Rs 200/-) 
Prelims at 4:00 PM, Saturday, 11 Feb 2023, Xavier Hall

5. The Fr. Hedwig Da Costa Memorial Shakespeare Elocution Contest

❖ Open to college participants. Not more than 6 participants per institution.
❖ Participants may use monologues or significant speaking moments from Shakespeare’s plays.
❖ Time limit: 3+1 minutes.
❖ Prior registration is essential. Please click here to register.
❖ Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 readings of a male character’s lines, and to the top 3 readings of a female character’s lines.The institution fielding the best team will be awarded an overall trophy.
❖ Entry fee: Rs 100/- (Rs 500/- for 6 participants per institution). ❖ Rs 50/- for SJU students.

6. The T.G. Vaidyanathan Memorial Film Review Contest

❖ Open to college students and to the general public.
❖ Participants will watch a film and write an original 1500-word review.
❖ Participants may watch the film remotely and email the review to metajosephs@gmail.com with the subject “T.G.V. Film Review Contest META 2023”. Please remember to add your full name and mobile number.
The film will also be screened at the SJU campus on Monday, 13 Feb 2023 at 10 AM and Tuesday, 14 Feb 2023 at 12 noon (Arrupe Block, 2nd Floor, AV Room)

7. Nicholas Parsons Trophy for JAM (Just a Minute)

❖ Open to college students
❖ Participants will speak without hesitation, repetition or deviation on an assigned topic within a minute amid challenges from other contestants.
❖ Limited entries.
