META 2018–Contests, Rules and Schedule

META 2018

General Rules

  • META 2018 will feature contests in the writing, speaking, quizzing, art and performance
  • The contests will be held from 07 February 2018 to 18 February 2018.
  • The contests are generally open to college students, school students and the general public, unless otherwise specified.
  • Each institution can field an unlimited number of teams/participants.
  • To register for events, please use the forms provided at http://metajosephs.in
  • You may also confirm entries from your institution with a phone-call to the numbers provided below or an email to metajosephs@gmail.com by 6 February 2018.
  • You can also send a letter confirming entries from your institution with the participants.
  • Teams/participants must carry valid identification from the institution they are representing.
  • Participants/teams must report to the Reception Desk at the Undergraduate Block on Langford Road, following which they will be directed to the venues.
  • The decision of the judges will be final and binding on all participants.
  • All contests (except those on Saturdays and Sundays) will begin by 3: 15 pm after registrations and conclude by 5 pm.
  • While we will allow on-the-spot entries for Writing. Quizzing and Art events, all Speaking events and Performing Arts events require prior registration.
  • A championship shield will be awarded to the college that tops the overall scoreboard.

 WRITING EVENTS

  1. The Prof. Barbra Naidu Prize for the Personal Essay
  • Participants must write a personal essay of about 1500-3000 words on the theme “Friending/Unfriending”.
  • The contest is open to school and college students and to the general public.
  • Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Best School Entry, Best College Entry, and Best Entry (Overall)
  • Submissions can be made either in person, or sent by post to the Dept. of English, St. Joseph’s College, Langford Road, Bangalore 560029 or sent by email (attach a word document) to barbranaiduprize@gmail.com
  • The last date for receiving submissions in any form is 11 Feb 2018.
  1. The Prof T.G. Vaidyanathan Memorial Film Review Contest
  • The contest is open to college students as well as the general public.
  • Participants will watch a film and write an original 500-750 word review.
  • Entry Fee: – Rs. 50/-
  • No limit on the number of entries per institution.
  • Screening dates: 11:30 am, Friday, 09 Feb 2018 & 11:30 am, Saturday, 12 Feb 2018 (Submission date: Monday, 12 Feb 2018 (by midnight)
  • Entries from registered participants to be mailed to metajosephs@gmail.com
  1. Fandom Menace
  • An on-the-spot fan-fiction contest open to all
  • Participants will be given a starting paragraph which they must use to produce and complete a story featuring known fictional/literary characters.
  • Open to school & college students, and to the general public.
  • Contest date: 3: 15 pm, Wednesday, 07 Feb 2018
  • Entry Fee: – Rs. 50/-

 

  1. The Children’s Fiction Contest
  • Open to all
  • Participants must report at the venue to write a story for children on the spot, using an assigned starter.
  • Contest starts at 3:15 pm on Thursday, 08 Feb 2018.
  • Entry Fee: – Rs. 50/-

 ART EVENTS 

  1. Cover Drive—the Book Cover Design contest
  • Open to college students only. Team event (2 members)..
  • Participants must produce a book cover with illustrations and accompanying text in response to a brief that will be given on the spot.
  • Participants can work on the cover by hand or use a laptop to design the cover.
  • Contest date: Monday, 12th February 2018. (Report by 3:15 pm)
  • Entry Fee: Rs. 50/-

 

  1. LUSTRE –The Book Illustration contest
  • Open to college students only. Solo event
  • Participants must create by hand an illustration for an assigned passage from a book.
  • The passage will be assigned on the spot. KG Cardboard will be provided.
  • Participants are free to submit a pencil-sketch, a colour illustration or a painting
  • Contest Date: Saturday, 17th February 2018 (Report by 3 pm)
  • Entry Fee: Students (College) – Rs. 50/-

SPEAKING EVENTS

  1. Just a Minute
  • Open to college students only
  • Prior registration essential. Please mail metajosephs@gmail.com to register or use the form at metajosephs.in
  • Registrations will also be accepted at the Reception Desk on days prior to the event.
  • Entry Fee: Rs. 50/-
  • Participants will speak on without hesitation, repetition or deviation on an assigned topic within a minute amid challenges from other contestants.
  • Contest date: Wednesday, 07 February 2018 ((Report by 3:45 pm)

 

  1. The Prof. T.R.H. Peck Memorial Lecture Contest
  • Open to school/college students and the general public.
  • Participants must pick either a literary work or an author or an idea that is important in literature for their lecture.
  • Participants may use a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Entry Fee: Rs. 50/-
  • Contest date: 3: 15 pm, 12 February 2018.
  • Time on stage: 10 minutes (6 minutes plus 4 minutes for questions)

  1. Pret Text
  • Open to college students. Teams of two members.
  • The event will require the team to offer interpretations of texts/images/clips provided by the judge.
  • A jury will pick the best three teams.
  • Entry Fee: Rs. 50/- per team.
  • Contest date: 14 February 2018. (Report by 3:15 pm)

PERFORMING ARTS

  1. BollyGood
  • Open to college students
  • Contestants will perform dramatic readings of Bollywood/other film lyrics that they have translated into English
  • Evaluations will be based on how effective the translation is and on the performance.
  • Time allotted: 4 minutes
  • No costumes, props or music.
  • No swearing/objectionable language
  • Contest Date: 8 Feb 2018 (Report by 3:15 pm)

Poetry Slam

  • Open to college students only
  • Contestants will perform poetry they have composed on an assigned theme
  • The theme will be announced on 1 February 2018 on our FB page and on the fest website (http://metajosephs.in)
  • No costumes, props or music.
  • No swearing/objectionable language.
  • Time allotted: 3 minutes
  • Contest Date: 13 Feb 2018 (Report by 3:15 pm)
